Malawians misunderstand demonstrations—Forper

The Forum for Peace and Reconciliation (Forper) has called on the Consumers Association of Malawi (Cama) to call off the January 17 demonstrations, saying Malawians do not understand their significance.

Cama, however, said it is not ready to respond to every news conference on the matter.

Speaking during a news conference in Mzuzu on Wednesday, Forper chief executive officer the Reverend Dr Ian Longwe said although it is people’s right to demonstrate, experience has shown that they do not end peacefully.

“Malawians are yet to understand demonstrations. To some, they mean destruction of property which will affect the economy further. It means being unruly,” said Longwe.

He called on Cama and government to find an amicable solution to prevent loss of lives and property.

Forper board chairperson the Reverend Mwai Kamuyambeni admitted that Malawians are facing economic hardships.

“Everyone, including myself, is facing these problems. But we must know that they came because the [late] Bingu wa Mutharika administration mismanaged the economy. It cannot be corrected within a short period of time,” he said.

But Cama executive director John Kapito said response: “There are many news conferences and there will be more. Should we be responding to each and every conference?”
