Malawian goalkeeper Simplex Nthala kept a clean sheet whereas striker Zicco Mkanda scored during the weekend’s Mocambola League games played on Saturday.

In his fifth league appearance this season, Nthala manned the posts whereas his little-known compatriot Dave Mphaya was in the terraces as Maxaquene thrashed Desportivo Nacala 5-0 in Maputo. Mkanda scored in Liga Muculmana’s 5-1 mauling of Ferroviaro Quelimane.

Ferroviaro de Nampula, whose key defenders include Malawian Foster Namwela, lead the Mozambique 14-member table on 15 points. On Saturday, they beat Ferroviaro de Maputo of Sankhani Nyirenda 3-0.

Maxaquene are second on 13 points followed by Muculmana’s 11 points.

In other games, Chimango Kayira and Moses Chavula, who was eventually substituted, featured in eighth-placed Costa dol Sol’s goalless draw with Desportivo Maputo.

In South Africa, Gabadinho Mhango is now one goal behind the league’s top scorer Bernard Parker’s 10 goals after the Flames man scored the sole winner in beating Orlando Pirates.

Lying second to Mhango is veteran Esau Kanyenda whose brace earned Polokwane City a 2-1 win over Mpumalanga Black Aces on Sunday afternoon and took his tally to eight goals.

“I am happy that I scored two goals and the most important thing is to make my team win as you know we are fighting relegation. It is always difficult to be consistent, but with time everything will be okay,” Kanyenda toldThe Nation.

In Polokwane’s win, SuperSport.com reported that Kanyenda turned home a Jabu Maluleke pass on the 14th minute only for Abia Nale to restore parity. Kanyenda added the second when finishing off a through ball from Kabelo Lichaba on 62nd minutes.

Still in South Africa, Atusaye Nyondo featured in his University of Pretoria’s barren draw with AmaZulu whereas Robin Ngalande came in the 85th minute for Bidvest Wits’ 0-0 draw with SuperSport United.

On the same Saturday, Golden Arrows, who are Peter Wadabwa’s employers, defeated Platinum Stars 4-1 with Robert Ng’ambi, who like Nyondo has seven goals, in action. Arrows are bottom on 18 points followed by Free State Stars second from the basement with 24 points, then Polokwane at 27 points.
