Malawi’s art exhibition ends on a high

What was intended to be just a three-day preview almost turned full scale after improved patronage forced organisers of the just ended art exhibition at Serendipity Club in Lilongwe to extend it by a week.

The exhibition, themed The Shaking World, was organised by Lilongwe-based fine artist Staner Chindebvu to help publicise his artworks, where photographs by Manirohini Sivasubramananiam were also exhibited.

In an interview, Chindebvu said out of the eight paintings he exhibited, five were sold “at a reasonable profit margin beyond my imagination”.

The five include Where are we going, Landlocked, but many ways; Strings; The Tourist and Fish.

Sivasubramananiam’s famous photograph Population which was taken in Colombia also fetched a fortune.

“I would rate the [preview] exhibition a success because all in all, we achieved what we set out to do which was to present an art exhibition of a higher than the usual standard and we managed to get a fair representation,” he said.

The main event is slated for Bingu International Conference in Lilongwe in March.
