Malawi’s Education Bill stirs tempers

Listen to this article

Tempers flared on Wednesday as members of the Civil Society Education Coalition (Csec) in Malawi protested against delays by Parliament to enact the long-awaited Education Bill.

They accused the House’s Education Committee of playing politics by demanding that the Bill be referred to it for further scrutiny.

Speaking during a meeting with the Legal Affairs and Education committees of Parliament, former Csec board member Fryson Chodzi blamed the Education Committee for dragging the progress on the Bill.

Dedza North West MP Alekeni Menyani asked Csec members not to be emotional over the Bill, saying the committee was simply following the House’s procedures on handling of bills.

Legal Affairs Committee chairperson Kezzie Msukwa said the committees were committed to pass the Bill but only after thorough scrutiny.

Msukwa also disclosed that the University of Malawi (Unima) Bill of 2012 will not be tabled in Parliament because the Bill needs to be redrafted as it has several flaws.
