Flamboyant Mighty Wanderers FC main supporters committee chairperson Yona Malunga has said he will not seek re-election at the elections on Sunday.

Malunga yesterday said he felt he had failed his duties as evidenced by the team’s fans involvement in cases of violence.

“I am not seeking re-election because I feel as chairperson, I would have done better on issues to do with violence that led to the team being fined and banned.

“However, on the pitch, I believe I did well because during my tenure, we managed to win the Standard Bank Knockout Cup twice and you will agree with me that nyerere [Wanderers fans] were the most outstanding in offering morale support to the team,” said Malunga.

He also boasted about establishing and maintaining zones.

He brushed off suggestions that he is afraid of competition, saying: “I just want to take a good rest and concentrate on my personal business. I want to recharge my batteries and maybe after taking a rest, I will bounce back.”

Yona’s deputy, Onani Chaponda, is the only one who has so far expressed interest to contest for the top supporters’ seat.

According to the Nomads newly formed electoral college’s secretary, Henry Chibowa, the delegates will be required to pay K1 500 (US$4).

Chibowa said those aspiring for the hot seat are required to pay a K50 000 (US$123) nomination fee while those vying for first and second-vice chairperson will pay K30 000 (US$74). Aspirants for posts of secretary and treasurer will pay K25 000 (US$61.4) while those gunning for posts of vice-secretary and vice-treasurer will pay K20 000 (US$49). Those vying for committee membership will pay K10 000 (US$25).

“In coming up with the dates, we looked at other principles on elections apart from giving the supporters and aspirants time to prepare. For that reason, we also considered that supporters will have to produce identity cards as proof that they are bona fide members of the club. It [the fee] will also be part of revenue stream to assist the team which currently has no sponsor,” said Chibowa.
