The Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) last Sunday launched a maize flour distribution campaign in the Southern Region.

Speaking when he distributed maize flour to needy Muslims at Lirangwe in Blantyre and Balaka, MAM chairperson Sheikh Idrissah Muhammad reminded Muslims to observe the third Islamic pillar of paying Zakat.

“We asked government to assist us with maize flour because during this period many Malawians are facing food shortages.

“This is just the launch, but we will be contributing up to April to make sure that many needy people benefit,” said Muhammad.

MAM secretary general Sheikh Salmin Omar appealed to beneficiaries of the donations not to sell the maize flour.

Sheikh Ali Kennedy thanked government for responding to MAM’s appeal for food aid to distribute to people facing hunger.
