Mama G invites Malawi’s actress to Nigeria

Malawi continues to press for its presence in Nigeria’s film culture with an adaptation of Rising Choreos and Theatre Company’s play The Return likely to be on the silver screen.

Rising Choreos managing director Joyce Mhango Chavula said she is expected to travel to Nigeria to discuss the transformation of the 2010 production, which featured renowned Nollywood actor Patience Mama G Ozokwo in a countrywide tour, into a motion picture.

“Mama G has now invited me to Nigeria so that we can meet producers and look at other logistics for the film. We have to go by October 15 and we will be there for three weeks,” Mhango-Chavula said on Tuesday.

While admittedly excited with the prospects of seeing her script become an international feature, she appealed to well-wishers for about K700 000 (about $2 333) to cater for air tickets for two.

She reckons the Nigerian is already doing a lot for Malawian art and it would be unfair to ask to have her pay for the trip.

In July, she went to Freetown, Sierra Leone, to take part in Nollywood ace Desmond Elliot’s upcoming movie.

She reckons Malawi’s newfound ties with Nigeria will help marry movie industries in the two countries.

National Bank of Malawi (NBM) has roped in Lucius Banda, Lulu and Kapirintiya in Friday night’s show to celebrate their involvement in Sunbird Sand Festival.

According to NBM chief marketing officer Wilkins Mijiga, the bank will use the show at its Moneymen Club in Blantyre to popularise its mobile banking solutions—Mo626 Ice, Visa Point of Sale (POS) and BankNet—which underpin their participation in the festival slated for next weekend at Sunbird Nkopola in the lakeshore district of Mangochi.

Mijiga told the press in Blantyre on Thursday NBM is proud to partner Sunbird Hotels as its major customers as well as to market the country’s superb talent and tourism attractions through the three-year-old festival.

“As it will be at the pre-festival show, we will brand the festival grounds at Sunbird Nkopola as a cash-free area by encouraging electronic banking. Patrons and holidaymakers can buy your tickets and pay your bills 24/7 using our secure innovations, Mo626 and BankNet,” explained Mijiga.

He said NBM will give away 50 festival tickets and a full-board night at Nkopola for two and a mother to lucky customers—for the event coincides with Mothers Day.

Sunbird group marketing manager Daniel Tambala said the hotel chain was happy with NBM participation because no one can host a successful festival singlehandedly.

The festival will pool Black Missionaries, Maskal, Fikisa and other movers and shakers of the local vibe on the same venue as South Africa’s DJ Professor, Botswana’s Makhirikhiri, Mozambique’s Masukusa and Zimbabwe’s Banyana Bafana.
