Mchinji Police Station spokesperson Kaitano Lubrino said the couple was arrested at Mchekeni Village in Traditional Authority Mlonyeni in Mchinji.

The arrest followed revelations that the couple was forcing their 13-year-old daughter to sleep with with her stepfather aged 45

Lubrino said the girl reported the matter to her grandmother allegedly after she had been sexually abused for a long time. It is believed that the father had ritual-related motives, according to Lubrino.

“The parents advised her not to reveal the matter. The girl’s mother claimed that was the only way to get out of poverty. The girl got tired and revealed it to her grandmother,” he said.

The girl’s grandmother took the matter to police. Hospital tests confirmed the girl was sexually abused.

The suspects, who come from Mchekeni Village in T/A Mlonyeni in the district, will appear in court soon.
