Man arrested for illegal drug sale

Police in Zomba have arrested 39-year-old Master Nankhonya on charges of possessing and selling assorted medical drugs without a licence.

The arrest came after members of the public alerted police after becoming suspicious of the man who was conducting his alleged unlawful business from a travelling bag.

“A police team on duty, acting on a tip-off, followed up the information and arrested the suspect while selling the medical drugs at Sunuzi Market without a licence contrary to Section 35 subsection 1as read with Section 65 of Pharmacy and Poisons Act,” said Zomba Police deputy spokesperson Davie Sulumba.

During the exercise, police confiscated 2 200 capsules of Inthromizine, 2 200 capsules of Indocide, 1 000 tablets Mirophyicn and 13 bottles of Benzy Penicillin, among other assorted medical drugs.

The suspect, who hails from Masauli Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Juma in Mulanje is expected to appear before court this week to answer the charge of being found in possession of medical drugs.

“We would like to warn the general public to avoid buying such medical drugs from local markets for some of them are expired due to several factors including storage conditions and may cause further complications to one’s health,” said Sulumba. n
