Man arrested for impersonation

Police in Dedza have arrested a man for allegedly soliciting money  by trickery.

Dedza Police Station spokesperson Cassim Manda  identified the suspect as Shadreck Banda, 46, from Pondani Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Chikho in Ntchisi District.

He said the suspect solicited the money from the Salanje family whose son was arrested for arson. The suspect claimed that he was a State prosecutor handling their son’s case and he would drop it once they paid him K100 000.

“Banda called Salanje to send the money through Airtel Money which she [Salanje]did. However, she was   surprised that her son was convicted and sentenced.

“Salanje went to Dedza Police [Station] to report the matter and investigations led to the suspect’s arrest,” he said.

Banda will answer the charge of cheating contrary to Section 321 of the Penal Code.

Meanwhile, Dedza police is warning people to be on high alert to avoid being swindled by tricksters.
