Man arrested for stealing MTL cables

Police at Nkhunga in Nkhotakota have arrested Enock Piyo, 28, for allegedly stealing Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) telephone cables.

The suspect comes from Maliya Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Chikumbu in Mulanje District, but is based at Dwangwa Trading Centre in Nkhotakota. 

Nkhunga Police Station spokesperson Sergeant Austin Kaunda said the suspect stole the cables on May 6 at Dwangwa Cane Growers Limited’s MTL cable lines.

Kaunda said a Dwangwa Cane Growers guard, Alex Zakeyo, while on patrol intercepted Piyo as he was cutting the cables. 

The cables stolen are worthy K450 800 (about $1 127), according to Kaunda.

The suspect is expected to appear before Nkhunga Second Grade Magistrate’s Court soon to answer a case of theft.
