fake-moneyPolice in Nkhotakota are keeping in custody Samson Chitembeya, 36, for allegedly being found with counterfeit banknotes amounting to K410 000. This comes barely two months after a court in the district convicted and sentenced Edward Josiah to prison for the same charge.

Nkhotakota Police spokesperson Williams Kaponda said Chitembeya allegedly committed the crime on October 4 at Nkhotakota Trading Centre. He said police were tipped by the public about the crime and moved in to arrest the suspect.

“Soon after the arrest, Chitembeya was searched and he was found with K410 000 counterfeit banknotes, all bearing the same serial number,” said Kaponda.

The suspect, who comes from Mtaya Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Wimbe in Kasungu, will appear before Nkhotakota Magistrate’s Court to answer charges of forgery, contrary to Section 374(E) of the Penal Code. In the picture, Chitembeya and part of the fake banknotes.
