Police in Mzuzu City have arrested a man for being found in possession of medical drugs without supporting documents.

The incident comes as the country is experiencing shortage of drugs in public hospitals due to reduced funding to district health offices (DHOs) and, in some cases, pilferage.

Mzuzu Police Station spokesperson Martin Bwanali yesterday identified the suspect as Noah Kaira, 36, of Mwenewisi Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kilipula in Karonga District.

He said Kaira was arrested at Chibavi Township in the city where police found him with the medical drugs in his house.

He has been charged with illegal possession of medical drugs and will appear before court soon, according to police.

“Our officers were tipped-off that the man was had assorted drugs in his house at Chibavi and when they went to the house, they found the medical drugs. The man is not a medical officer so we are also investigating to trace the source of the drugs,” said Bwanali. n
