Dickson: I dedicated myself to making people look good

Welcome to Ntcheu Boys Barber shops. We are not in Ntcheu district as the name suggests, but somewhere in Lilongwe.

Twenty three-year-old Lovemore Dickson is the man behind three barber shops; two at Mwenyekondo Trading Centre and one at Phwetekere Trading Centre within the city.

He named his barber shops after Ntcheu because he had many good friends from the district.

Lovomore left his home, Mtakataka in Dedza, in 2009 with a capital of K15 000 and set up a barber shop at Mwenyekondo.

“I had a friend in Mtakataka who was working as a barber at somebody’s shop. I admired the job, but I wanted something bigger than just securing employment, so I vowed to myself that someday I would own a barber shop,” says Dickson who got married a few months ago.

According to Dickson, his experience in this business has helped him to attract customers from various townships and ultimately expand the business by opening two more shops.

“I have dedicated myself to making people look. Apart from customers that visit my barber shops, there are several others who prefer to have their hair shaved in the comfort of their homes. All they do is call me,” says the businessman who employs three people.

Dickson, who dropped out of school in form one at Mtakataka Secondary School, dreams of opening more barber shops in the future.

“I admire Malawians who own business empires. I want to have my own chain of barber shops in Lilongwe and other cities,” he dreams.

He boasts that he is able to cut his customers’ in various styles, depending on their choice.

“Some barber shops just put up posters and claim to do things they cannot manage to, but Ntheu Boys Barber Shops don’t disappoint, because we know what to do with various head shapes,” says Dickson.
