Man commits suicide after HIV test

Police in the northern Malawi district of Karonga say a 48-year-old man in the district has committed suicide after he tested HIV positive.

Northern Region Police spokesperson Norah Chimwala on Monday, identified the deceased as David Mdolo of Mwambuli Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kyungu in the district.

“The deceased sent his wife to buy food at the market and when the wife returned, she found her husband lying in a pool of blood. He stabbed himself in the neck with a knife.

 “She reported the matter to police. She also revealed to the authorities that since the husband was tested HIV positive a few days ago, he has all along been worried; hence, the suicide,” said Chimwala.

A post-mortem conducted by Karonga District Hospital showed that death was due to excessive loss of blood.

In a related development, a 58-year-old man hanged himself from a tree in Mzimba

Chimwala identified the deceased as Short Ngulube of Zebediya Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) M’mbelwa in the district. He was discovered by his wife.

“The man went to drink beer before committing suicide. He came back at night and committed the act without disclosing the reason,” she said.
