Humphreys Bongololo was on Thursday ordered by the Nkukula Third Grade Magistrate’s Court to pay K25 000 (about $64) or serve a nine months imprisonment with hard labour for wounding a clinician at Area 25 Health Centre in Lilongwe.

Kanengo Police Station assistant public relations officer Constable Salome Chibwana said Bongololo has paid the fine, K20 000 (about $51) of which will go to the clinician.

The convict pleaded guilty to the offence of unlawful wounding, which is contrary to Section 241 of the Penal Code.

According to the case at Kanengo Police, Bongololo committed the crime in the early hours of March 23, 2013.

Details at the police show that Bongololo went to the health centre to receive treatment after he was injured.

When he arrived at the health facility, a security guard alerted the clinician, who has not been identified, that there was a man who needed treatment. However, the clinician found his office waterlogged due to a running tap.

He asked Bongololo to wait for a while so the water could be removed. This angered Bongololo who snatched the mop the clinician was using to clear the water and hit him in the head.

According to the records, the clinician sustained cuts in the head.

Following the incident, there was a fracas at the health centre last week, forcing the facility to close some operations, after staff refused to work.

Bongololo, 38, comes from Mtongola Village, Tradition Authority Malemia in Zomba.
