Police on Wednesday arrested a man aboard a train on the Limbe-Nayuchi route in Balaka after allegedly finding him in possession of a dead child’s body.

Eastern Region Police spokesperson Joseph Sauka, in a written response on Thursday confirmed the arrest of James Majawa, 28, of Chimphamba Village, Traditional Authority Nsamala in the district.

Sauka: Other passengers detected a foul smell

He said the suspect was found with a decapitated toddler’s body with intestines removed and chopped private parts.

Said Sauka: “Other passengers on the train detected a foul smell and this triggered calls to search the train. In the course of the search, the suspect was found with a dead child’s body wrapped in a black polythene bag. When quizzed, he alleged to have taken the body from Phalula in Balaka District. We are currently investigating the matter to find more details.”

The development comes amid cases of killings of people with albinism, with the latest case being of an 18-month-old child abducted in Karonga over a week ago.

A passenger Simon Swila, in a telephone interview, said the suspect was about to face mob justice but police intervened swiftly.

“People were so angry that they wanted to set the suspect on fire. But police whisked him away,” he said. President Peter Mutharika last week said his administration would ensure total security across the country amid reported cases of violence and attacks of people with albinism nationwide.
