Man jailed 30 months for theft
The Mangochi Second Grade Magistrate’s Court has sentenced Joseph Maruwasa, 27, to 30 months imprisonment for stealing K574 000 belonging to Best Food Company in the district.
State prosecutor Efford Kamphonje told the court that in December 2018, the convict, who hails from Kalikokha Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Tsikulamowa in Ntcheu, paid a visit to his sister ,Eliza Maruwasa, in Mangochi who was working at the said company as manager.
Due to lack of space at her house, she asked the owner of the company to provide her brother accommodation in their offices.
The court learnt that convict stayed for two months in the shop until February 10 2019 when he stole the cash from the office and disappeared.
The matter was reported to Mangochi Police Station after the suspect’s sister discovered that some money was missing.
Later, the police arrested the convict at his home village.
He pleaded guilty to the charge.
In mitigation, the convict asked for lenience, saying he is a breadwinner for his family.
But the State asked for custodial sentence.
