The Ntchisi First Grade Magistrate’s Court on Friday convicted and sentenced a 24-year-old man to five years imprisonment with hard labour (IHL) for theft by public servant contrary to Section 286 of the Penal Code.

Ntchisi Police spokesperson Gladson M’bumpha said State prosecutor Austin Daudi told the court that the convict, Dick Shumba, during the month of October 2012, when he was employed by Samuel Chikakuda at Katimba Trading Centre in Dowa stole K176 040 (US$548) from his boss.

“The court further heard that the convict in September 2012 was given K420 000 (US$1 308) to buy maize for his employer but the convict only spent K209 000 (US$651) for the intended purpose and deliberately diverted the remaining cash into his own business,” said M’bumpha.

He said, in court, the suspect pleaded guilty to the charge of theft by public servant for failing to account for K176 040.

M’bumpha said first grade magistrate Dorothy Kalua ordered Shumba to serve a five year jail term term to deter others from committing the same crime.
