The court further heard he gave her K200 to shut up. But while they were still in the house the victim’s elder sister walked in and asked her younger sister what was happening. The victim revealed that she was defiled.

The elder sister reported to their mother who referred the issue to police, who arrested Soko.

State prosecutor Davie Mloza said defilement is a serious offence which attracts a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

“The offence is very common in Mzimba as the court receives such offences almost daily in the district.”

“Although Soko is the first offender he deserves a stiff sentence to reform his character and deter would-be offenders at the same time,” he said.

Passing judgment, magistrate Loness Gumbo concurred with the the State in his sentiments.

“I , therefore , sentence Soko to 84 months imprisonment with hard labour,” she said. n
