Nkhata Bay Police are looking for Komani Nyirenda, 33, for allegedly setting ablaze his two houses and in the process causing death of his two-year old daughter.

Nkhata Bay Police spokesperson Martin Bwanali confirmed the incident, saying it occurred at Chakupompha area in the district.

Speaking in an interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana), Bwanali said it all started last Thursday when the suspect went on a drinking spree and returned at 10pm. His two wives and children were fast asleep. Then he reportedly decided to set ablaze the two houses.

His second wife woke up late and rushed out of the house with beddings, leaving behind her two-year old daughter, Tijenge, who died of suffocation, according to police.

However, Bwanali said the first wife’s family escaped from the ordeal unharmed.

Komani is from Njikho Village, Traditional Authority Kabunduli in Nkhata Bay.
