A 39-year-old man identified by police as Lumbani Namba, a revenue tax officer for Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), shot himself dead around Sunday midnight in Chigumula Township in Blantyre, police have said.

In an interview on Monday, Limbe Police Station deputy spokesperson Pedzisai Zembeneko said police cannot divulge details of the incident as they are still investigating it.

However, he said Namba shot himself in the head and was found dead in the early hours of Monday a few metres away from his home.

“It was around midnight when the deceased’s wife and some family members heard a gunshot nearby. When they woke up, they realised the deceased was not in bed.

“They went out to look for him, but they could not find him until early in the morning when some people found him. On the spot was a gun and a cartilage,” said Zembeneko.

He said Namba left a suicide note in his house, but he said the police can also not give details of what is contained in the note as investigations are underway.

Post-mortem at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) on Tuesday revealed Namba shot himself through the mouth, according to police. n
