A 41-year-old Nkhotakota man is in police custody for allegedly raping and impregnating his 21-year-old step daughter to get rich.

Nkhotakota Police spokesperson Kaitano Lubrino identified the suspect as Takilima Bushiri of Chitambo Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Mphonde in the district.

Lubrino said the victim told the police that during the month of July 2013, she was approached by her father who demanded to have sex with her as directed by a herbalist.

“The suspect is said to have told the girl that she and her mother would become mad if she refused to grant him his wish.

“When the girl discovered that she was pregnant, the father advised her to abort the baby using charms, but the plan failed,” he said.

Lubrino said the matter was reported to police by the girl’s mother, who the suspect claims was part of the plan to get rich.

He said the suspect will appear before Nkhotakota Magistrate’s Court to answer to a charge of rape, which is contrary to Section 132 of the Penal Code and attracts a maximum penalty of 14 years imprisonment with hard labour.—Mana
