Police in Mponela, Dowa, have arrested Leonard Chimalizeni for allegedly being found in possession of medical drugs without a licence, Mponela Police spokesperson Kondwani Kandiado confirmed on Tuesday.

He said Chimalizeni (23) was arrested at Madisi Trading Centre on Sunday morning following a tip-off that the suspect was selling the drugs in a resthouse room.

“When police stormed the room, they found assorted drugs such as bactrim and magnesium in cartons. However, we are yet to establish the total value of the drugs,” said Kandiado.

He said the suspect will appear in court to answer charges of being found in possession of medical drugs without a licence, which contradicts Section 45(1) of the Medicines, Pharmacy and Poisons Board Act.

“Mponela Police is, therefore, urging the general public to take medicine prescribed by medical personnel only when they fall sick,” he said.

Chimalizeni comes from Chitsime Village in Kasungu.
