Donbell Mandala’s consistent form on the golf course continued on Saturday when he won the 2016 edition of the Habp Golf Tournament at Mulanje Golf Club (MGC).

His feat came barely a week after winning the Nico Life Insurance Tournament at Country Club Limbe (CCL).

Played on medal format, the 12-handicap Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) golfer carried the day without hardly breaking sweat by registering a 65 gross score.

However, there was a tight contest for runner-up position as three golfers —Lester Tandwe, Frank Jomo and Gift Gondwe—tied on 65 gross, but after a countback it was Tandwe who counted out Jomo.

“I am enjoying my golf at the moment and my performance simply superb today,” said Mandala who received a double-door refrigerator, K50 000 worth of fuel and five of litres oil.

He also thanked Habp for what he described as fantastic prizes and good organisation of the tournament which attracted 65 golfers.

In the ladies section, Doreen Kabvala (24h/c) was all smiles after coming out tops with a 79 gross score. Bhose Kamphulusa (h/c 29) was her runner-up after registering 79 gross score. She counted out Beatrice Mangwana.

Kabvala received a Defy cooker, K50 000 worth of fuel and five litres of oil.

With a gross score of 72, Don Whayo was the winner in the senior’s category.

Habp managing director and chairperson Harold Lungu had the longest drive but being the sponsor he gave part of his prizes to his runner-up Osman.

“I will split my prizes by giving senior golfer James ‘JJ’ Chikapa K20 000 worth of of fuel while the rest will go to Osman,” he said.

Lungu said they sponsored the tournament as one way of thanking their customers such as Eastern Produce and Lujeri who are based in Mulanje.

“It was meant to foster our strategic partnership with our customers here and it is also part of our corporate social responsibility because from the little that caddies got, they will buy food, thereby making a difference to their lives.”

Habp said they invested about K10 million in the event and K500 000 went towards the maintenance of the golf course. n
