The Malawi National Examinations Board (Maneb) has disqualified 2 335 candidates for cheating in this year’s Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations.

The board released MSCE results on Friday with a low pass rate of 51.8 percent.

Maneb spokesperson Gerald Chiunda said in an interview on Tuesday that Maneb is also withholding results for other centres for non-payment of examinations and identity cards fees.

The spokesperson, however, said some centres duly paid the fees, but there was mishandling of documentation. He said the board is processing results of those centres.

The Maneb results show that out of 111 781 candidates who sat the examinations, 53 875 failed.

African Network on Education Campaign for All (Ancafa) policy and advocacy manager  Limbani Nsapato earlier said the results are a reflection that  government  is  wasting an estimated K10.8 billion for the four-year period MSCE candidates spend in secondary schools.
