Mangochi chief urge farmers to embrace crop diversification

Village Head Mwambayiye of Traditional Authority (T/A) Nankumba in Mangochi has said Malawi will continue registering high levels of food insecurity if both small-scale and commercial farmers prioritise maize cultivation at the expense of other crops.

Mwambayiye said this on Thursday at Kankhande Junior Primary School where he addressed his subjects on the importance of championing school feeding programmes being implemented at the school.

He said farmers should change their focus on maize production and put emphasis on growing other crops such as sorghum, millet, potatoes, cassava, beans and groundnuts,.

Mwambayiye said some of these crops are resistant to drought, which assures farmers, they would still harvest something even during adverse weather conditions.

The chief also said some of the cited crops are marketable at both local and international markets.

“The other advantage of growing diversified food is that there is assurance of nutrition security among people as different crops contain different levels of nourishments,” he said.

The chief advised people who have harvested some crops not to sell nor exchange their yields with pieces of cloths (zitenje), water buckets, plates as there is looming hunger in the country this year.
