Mangochi DC appeals forsupport of flood victims

Mangochi district commissioner Thomas Chirwa on Tuesday appealed for more support for at least 15 429 people who have been affected by floods in the district following heavy rains last week.

Chirwa in an interview thanked Malawi government, various organisations and individuals for the assistance rendered.

He, however, said the number of displaced people may rise as assessments are still underway.

“We have received plastic sheets, pails, cups, maize and maize flour, blankets, seed for replanting and tents.

“We cannot say they are enough because the assessment of those being affected was conducted on 12 January and other assessments are underway,” said Chirwa.

The affected areas, according to Chirwa, include Namkumba, Chowe, Namabvi, Chimwala and Mponda whereas 4 167 hectares have been swept away.

The displaced people are being sheltered in schools and tents.
