Mangochi DHO gets K19m PPE

A consortium comprising Save the Children, Trocaire, Catholic Development Commission in Malawi (Cadecom) and Catholic Relief Services has donated personal protective equipment (PPE) to Mangochi District Health Office.

Speaking on Saturday during the handover, Cadecom director of social development Father Ted Chigamba said they want to enhance government’s efforts in fighting the pandemic in the district.

“The items will be distributed to schools, markets and other public places in the district,” he said.

On his part, Mangochi district commissioner Raphael Piringu commended the consortium for the donation.

“However, we need more face masks and hand-washing facilities in markets and other hotspots as the district has high population,” he said.

Piringu also said the district needs more Covid-19 awareness campaigns to change people’s mindset towards the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the district council, in conjunction with police, continues to enforce the Covid-19 guidelines set by the Ministry of Health.

The guidelines seek to contain the further spread of the pandemic and they include mandatory wearing of face masks in public, reducing seating capacity on public transport and bars operating between 2pm and 8pm, among others.

The items, including water buckets, soap, chlorine, face masks and hand sanitisers, were donated through the European Union (EU) Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Project following President Lazarus Chakwera’s appeal for support in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

The EU Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Project is being implemented in seven districts, namely, Dedza, Lilongwe, Mzimba, Blantyre, Mulanje, Mwanza and Mangochi.
