Mangochi Police, Silver in Carlsberg Cup semis

Mangochi Police are through to the Carlsberg Cup semi-finals after stunning PremierBet Wizards FC 3-2 through post-match penalties at MDC Stadium in Blantyre yesterday.

The Master Security Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) Premier League side lived up to its promise of not giving the Super League side room to dominate the game.

Wizards thought it would be a repeat of the round of 16 feat when  they came from behind to beat Mzuzu United 3-1 through post-match penalties, but to no avail.

After a 0-0 stalemate in regulation time, the hosts ended up losing to the Mangochi-based Malawi Police Service (MPS) side.

Mangochi have now booked a date against Be Forward Wanderers in the semi-final.

They join Silver strikers who narrowly beat Red Lions 1-0 at Balaka Stadium yesterday.

Captain Lucky Malata scored for the Bankers to proceed to the semi-finals of the competition and virtually complete the semi-final line-up.

Meanwhile, Silver will wait for the winner of the match between Nyasa Big Bullets and Mafco quarter-final which was postponed due to violent scenes a day before the match at Chitowe Stadium in  Dwangwa, Nkhotakota on  Friday.

Meanwhile, the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) competitions subcommittee will  meet today to decide on the way forward, according to FAM competitions manager Gomezgani Zakazaka.

Mangochi are the only lower league side still in contention for the cup whose ultimate prize is K12 million.

Wanderers are the current holders.
