Mangochi Town Council retains chairs

A full meeting of members of Mangochi Town Council yesterday re-elected Ibrahim Kacheya and Maimuna Mwanyali as chairperson and vice-chairperson respectively.

Kacheya, who is a councillor for Mikoma Ward, and Mwanyali who is a councillor for Kalunga Ward, retained their positions unopposed.

However, the election could have been marred by irregularities when at the eleventh hour, the town’s chief executive officer Sellina Chimphamba wanted to give Mwasa Ward councillor Hassam M’bwana Dickson a chance to contest, a development observers called unprocedural.

In his acceptance speech, Kacheya pledged continued development in the district, including the construction and maintenance of infrastructure such as roads.

He said the remarkable developments his office has managed to register in the previous term were just a start of what he wants to implement in the council.

Said Kacheya: “For two- and-a-half years we have been at the helm, we have managed to bring visible developments in the town. Talk of buildings, garbage collection, among other notable milestones.

“This is why we have managed to win the hearts of the people. This signifies that we had capable leadership.”

He said he will strive to work hard to ensure that the town has good roads, bridges, markets, schools, among others.

“I want to leave a good legacy when I finish my tenure of office,” he said.

Speaking in a separate interview, Chimphamba commended the two councillors, saying the secretariat is ready to support them to realise full potential of development in the district.
