March deadline for traffic interchange
Motorists in Lilongwe City should brace for traffic flow disruption for the next five months to facilitate construction of a traffic interchange at the former Area 18 Roundabout.
To facilitate the construction of the country’s first overhead traffic interchange, Roads Authority (RA) is closing part of the M1 at the site.
Speaking after a tour of the construction site, Roads Fund Administration chief engineer Joel Longwe said the road would be temporarily closed to ease potential traffic congestion during the implementation of the project.
He said: “We are closing temporarily part of M1 so that construction works should not be distracted and we are urging all motorists to be using the diversions that have been constructed around the construction site.”
Longwe said the construction of the dual carriageway stretching from Parliament Roundabout to Bingu National Stadium Roundabout would ease traffic congestion in the city.
“As Roads Fund Administration, we are hoping that after completing this project, the traffic jams in our roads will be reduced as people will have more choice on which route to take,” he said.
The project, which is expected to be completed in March 2020 and is locally funded. Mota-Engil Malawi is the project contractor.
