Four days after Malawi News Agency reported that there are no toilets at the popular Tsangano Turn-Off Market in Ntcheu, the contractor, ACH Contractors Limited, has handed over the facilities to the council.

During a market sanitation review meeting last week, chairperson of Tsangano Turn-Off Market Austin Chimkango reported that the market toilets were no longer in use because they were full.

Chimkango appealed to the council to consider opening new toilets constructed by Shire River Basin Management Project at the market.

Officials during the handover of the toilets

Speaking when he handed over the toilets to the council, ACH Contractors Limited representative Joshua Nkhata said they arranged for a partial handover of the market structures following an appeal from the council to have the toilets handed over to them since there were no toilets at the market.

“We are almost through with the work, what is remaining for us it to install a new pump and connect pipes from the tank to taps. The work was delayed because we had bought a pump which, after installation, could not pump the water to the required distance,” he said.

Nkhata said the contractor has since identified a suitable pump and they expect to install it this week.

Speaking after receiving the keys for the toilets, Ntcheu District Council director of administration Hastings Mlambuzi commended ACH Contractors Limited contractors for responding to the council’s appeal in good time. n
