Wilson Masamba on Sunday defeated his challenger Malani Kayuni on unanimous points decision in an eight-round non-title lightweight bout at Limpompo Club in Lilongwe.

Masamba dominated the bout while Kayuni failed to put up a decent opposition.

“I am glad to have won today. People were doubting my capabilities, but I have proved that I am still in shape. I hope he [Malani] has learnt something. It is important that young boxers like him should learn from their experienced counterparts like me,” said Masamba.

Kayuni claimed he had injured his right palm during training and this limited his aggressiveness in the ring.

“But I did not pull out of the fight to avoid disappointing my fans. The other reason is that the ring was in bad shape,” he said.

There was controversy during the curtain-raising bout between Robert Kachiza and Acklas Mchombo when the judges declared it a draw, but after consultations, it was awarded to Mchombo, a decision which angered some fans.

The bout was organised by Ngwenyama Boxing Promotions.n
