Communities from group village head (GVH) Kapyanga in Kasungu have expressed excitement at the construction of a modern maternity clinic at Kapyanga Trading Centre.

The clinic is being constructed under the water, sanitation and hygiene (Wash) in maternal and neonatal health project, which National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust is implementing in selected health centres in partnership with Water Aid.

The project follows an appeal GVH Kapyanga and his subjects made to government and development partners to construct a maternity clinic in the area.

He told a meeting recently that expectant women in the area face countless challenges to maternal services due to the long distance they have to cover to Kasungu District Hospital.

Kapyanga confirmed in an interview on Sunday that Nice and Water Aid have responded to their plea and that his subjects were excited with the swift action by the organisations.

Said the chief: “We are very grateful to the two organisations. There are just minor issues to look into before the community can start using it.”

Kasungu East member of Parliament Madalitso Kazombo hailed the project, saying it will reduce the distance expectant women cover to access maternity services at the nearest health facilities.
