Matindi Girls, Poly Ladies storm into finals

Matindi Girls Academy and Polytechnic Ladies will meet in the finals of the inaugural K1.5 million (about $8 982) Matindi Academy Schools Women Football Tournament following results of Saturday’s semi-finals.

Bullish Matindi Girls earned an away 9-1 triumph against St Louis CDSS at Balaka Stadium whereas determined Poly Ladies secured a 3-1 win against Namalimwe CDSS at Chiwembe ground in Blantyre.

Sungeni Msiska scored four goals for Matindi to take her tally to 21, strengthening her chances of winning the K20 000 Golden Boot Award. Her teammate Ruth Tambala scored a hat-trick. Pilirani Malora and Chimwemwe Sapanga also had a hand in St Louis’ slaughtering with a goal each before Jane Kayanga came in with a St Louis’ consolation.

For the Polytechnic Ladies, it was Monica Chapweteka, Lukia Sanudi and Ulemu Phiri who shattered Namalimwe’s title hopes at the Chiwembe ground with a goal each.

“My girls were confident with the ball. They played according to our game plan although there are some areas that need polishing so as to win the finals,” said Poly Ladies coach Patrick Kulemeka after their semi-final triumph on Saturday.

According to Southern Region Women Football Committee (SRWFC) general secretary Patricia Damalekani, they will announce the date and venue of the finals within the week.

Winners are expected to receive a trophy and K200 000 whereas runners-up and third-placed teams will receive K100 000 and K75 000 respectively.
