Experienced winger Maxwell Chirwa looks set to swap his Blantyre United football career for school. He leaves this week for South Africa in transit to USA to pursue studies.

Chirwa revealed this after scoring United’s winning penalty that earned them a Carlsberg Cup quarter final berth at the expense of 7-6 losers Civo United at the Kamuzu Stadium.

“My aunt based in America has invited me. Depending on the circumstances and opportunities, I might continue playing otherwise this could be the end of my football career. I did motor vehicle mechanic grade 2 and I will now do grade one,” said the 32-year-old ex-Mighty Wanderers star.

Chirwa was once touted as the big thing waiting to happen for Malawi football. His two goals for the Under-20 side took the Junior Flames to the 1999 Africa Youth Championship in Ghana.

But as he was working his way into the Flames, he broke his leg in a second game marking Malawi’s independence at the Kamuzu Stadium around 2003.

His career appeared over only for him to revive it at Blackpool. He then rejoined Wanderers before moving to United last season.

United coach Eliah Kananji described Chirwa’s winning spot kick as a farewell gift.
