Senior group village head(SGVH) Chapsinja in Traditional Authority (T/A) Masula in Lilongwe has emphasised the need for chiefs to attain a certain level of post-secondary education for them to serve their subjects better.

He made the remarks on Tuesday before his departure for China on the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Innovation Awards ticket.

MBC awarded the chief for taking the lead in the fight against illiteracy by enrolling with Mitundu Open Day Secondary School in 2011.

At the time, Chapsinja was 53 years old. He said he returned to school because “I want to study for a bachelor of social sciences degree so that I can serve my subjects better.

“I noted a number of gaps in the way I was serving my subjects because I lacked education.”

However, the chief did not perform well in the just-released Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examination results.

He scored 40 points, a development that forced the SGVH to repeat to reduce the points.

Chapsinja said he would like to score better points, which can earn him a place at a university.

MBC public relations officer Thembile Malinki assured that Innovation Awards are here to stay.

She, therefore, challenged more Malawians to innovate and make significant contribution towards the development of their societies to get recognised.

“MBC remains committed to inspiring the nation as well as promoting innovation through the MBC Innovations Awards. So far, seven innovators have been assisted to travel outside Malawi under the initiative. Three more will be flying out before the end of this year,” she said. n
