Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), the country’s State broadcaster, has been recognised at continental level for its contribution to the promotion of innovation.

MBC emerged among the top five institutions drawn from across Africa and selected from 67 entries at the 35th Africa Association for Public Administration and Management (AAPAM) Annual Roundtable Conference held at Serena Hotel in Kigali, Rwanda from November 18 to 22 this year, according to the corporation’s commercial director Levie Nkunika.

MBC submitted a project called ‘Barefoot Journalists’ which Nkunika said is another name for MBC Radio Listening Clubs (RLCs) that seek to facilitate dialogue between the rights holders (rural marginalised communities) and the duty-bearers (government agencies and non-governmental organisations) to ensure sustainable development. MBC has about 122 RCLs spread across the country.

Nkunika said MBC remains the only brand that reaches every rural household in Malawi transmitting through satellite, FM and medium wave.

Reacting to the recognition, MBC director general Benson Tembo said he was humbled by this development.

Said Tembo: “We at MBC are humbled by this recognition and we owe it to all Malawians, especially those in the rural areas who make these radio listening clubs vibrant.

“As a corporation, we are aiming for continuous improvement everyday as evidenced by the building blocks for future success that we have just developed including the development of a strategic plan, the editorial policy, the broadcasting house style and the launch of the Anti-Corruption Policy a few months ago.”

The continental awards honour public sector institutions, organisations and government ministries which have made exceptional and long-standing contributions to the public. Previous winners include the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa with its ‘Result Slip Scanning Project’; Ministry of Finance and Economic Empowerment of Mauritius with the ‘Moving Data to People’ project.
