Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) on Thursday disposed of 1 160 litres of used cooking oil some businesspeople imported from South Africa.

The dark-coloured oil would solidify at room temperature and form some particles at the bottom.

MBS director general Davlin Chokazinga said the physical and chemical assessments were done which showed that the oil was used in hotels and other places in South Africa.

“We took sample for testing at our office in Blantyre and the results showed that the oil was indeed substandard,” said Chokazinga.

He said 93 gallons of similar oil were also confiscated and disposed of in Dedza and 19 containers in Zomba.

MBS warned traders against importing the oil, saying when caught, the bureau will not only confiscate the oil but also prosecute them.

Chokazinga said the oil has potential of causing health problems to consumers.
