MBS warns on expired products

The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) has warned the public against buying and consuming expired products because they are a health risk and a burden to the country’s health service.

Speaking during the disposal of expired products last week in Dedza, MBS director general Davlin Chokazinga said people must desist from buying and consuming expired products because they are dangerous to the body.

“Once a product has expired, it changes its chemical composition and is a health risk. We urge all businesspeople, importers and consumers to stop use of expired products because they are a health hazard and put pressure on our already fragile health service system,” said Chokazinga.

According to MBS, the disposed of goods were consigned to Lilongwe Diocese and St Michaels Rural Hospital in Mchinji.

The goods valued at K200 000 (about $588), included 120 boxes of cereals, 117 boxes of biscuits, 213 boxes of nutritional drinks and 100 kg of fine salt. They weighed three metric tonnes.
