Mchinji District Council elects new leadership

Mchinji District Council has elected Edson Josiah and Haile Tsirizani as chairpesrson and vice-chairperson respectively.

Josiah, a councillor for Msitu Ward, defeated Kalumbe Ward councillor Stanley Banda by 11 votes to three while Tsirizani, who is councillor for Luwerezi Ward, made it unopposed.

In his acceptance speech, Josiah said he plans to work with fellow councillors to ensure that stalled projects are completed.

“There are projects such as the stadium, street lights and rehabilitation of some structures in the district which need implementation and completion. I will ensure that they are completed,” he said.

Josiah also called for transparency from the council secretariat to ensure that Mchinji is developed befitting a border district.

He called for unity between the council secretariat and parliamentarians in the district.

Mchinji district commissioner Richard Hara pledged to support the newly elected council leadership.

“As a secretariat, we will support you in implementing plans and development projects for the district,” he said.

Josiah and Tsirizani replace former chairperson and vice-chairperson Kennedy Chipanga and Nathan Dhlamini respectively, whose tenure ended mid this year.
