A group of concerned citizens in Mchinji District on Monday took to the streets to demand the transfer of district commissioner (DC) Rosemary Nawasha, accusing her of mismanaging council funds and being a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) sympathiser.

The group also asked for the transfers of Uthman Nkhoma, a works supervisor, John Muonjeza, director of public works and Cecilia Chakanza, director of finance from the council office within seven days  for mismanaging land and development funds.

A letter the citizens wrote addressed to Principal Secretary for Local Government and Rural Development, which was delivered to Mchinji District Council chairperson MtangaYona, says there has been illegal selling of land.

Reads the letter in part: “We are wondering how the land at PVHO was sold. As indigenous citizens of the district, we don’t know what is happening, the past DCs notified us of such developments.”

The group further blames the DC for selling land to her church without following proper procedures.

But when contacted, Navasha expressed ignorance of the protest.

She said: “I am not aware of that.”

According to Yona, the concerned citizens delivered their petition to him about three kilometres from the council’s office.

“But after receiving the petition, I took the copy to the council, and currently, I am taking a copy to Lilongwe as it has been addressed to the PS,” he said. The group has since threatened to close the council offices if the four do not leave within the stated period.
