Structures in Lilongwe City South East constituency have been split between Rodwel Kachibekete, who was last year suspended as constituency chairperson and Brandson Levison, who is the recognised constituency leader.

Speaking from his hospital bed on Sunday, Kawila said a group of people arrived at the MCP offices in Area 23 and demanded keys from the guard, saying he was taking over the leadership of the party.

“I was all alone at the office and they beat me up when I refused to surrender. I have a fracture on my leg and my whole body is in pains,” said Kawila.

He added that since Kachibekete was ousted in 2012, he had no position, but has been causing havoc, which led to a group of MCP leaders appealing to president Lazarus Chakwera to resolve the matter.

Lilongwe Police spokesperson Ramsey Mushani confirmed that a fracas between the two MCP factions took place, but Police have not made any leads on the suspects.
