MCP, DPP officials tussle over IDs ‘buying’

Mkaka: Police were
not cooperative

He said he left the police station to seek medical attention. However, he said he did not get a police report allegedly because the police were not cooperative.

But Kambalame, in a separate interview, denied assaulting Mkaka. However, he acknowledged that they met at Area 3 Police Station where he (Kambalame) was summoned over Mwale’s arrest.

He said Mkaka had sent MCP supporters to attack DPP followers in the communi t ies within Lilongwe Mpenu Constituency where people were being registered for loans.

Kambalame said there were six other people who should have been arrested alongside Mwale.

Lilongwe Police Station spokesperson Sub-Inspector Joseph Kachikho confirmed that both Mkaka and Kambalame were at the police station on Saturday night over the arrest of Mwale.

But he dismissed assertions that Kambalame assaulted Mkaka in full view of police.

Kachikho said Mwale is still in custody pending further investigations.

Reports that some people are buying national IDs in the Central Region have been rife in recent weeks and MCP has embarked on sensitisation campaign to alert communities to desist from handing over their IDs to unknown people
