Opposition MCP gurus are yet to respond to a letter from their one time leader and former leader of the New Republican Party (NRP) Gwanda Chakuamba on his intention to rejoin the party, the party’s spokesperson Jolly Kalelo has said.

“MCP has not accepted his membership and the MCP hierarchy has not responded to his application letter to rejoin the party,” said Kalelo.

However, Chakuamba has reiterated that he has the freedom to rejoin any political party of his choice despite what the MCP gurus say.

The remark also follows a decision by Malawi Congress Party’s (MCP) president John Tembo to block him, saying he is a political vagabond.

In an interview on Thursday, Chakuamba said the constitution of MCP does not block him from rejoining the party.

“I am now a member of MCP and it does not matter whether my decision to rejoin the party was discussed with the party’s hierarchy or not,” said Chakuamba.

But Kalelo claimed Chakuamba had hidden agenda for rejoining the party.

Following Chakuamba’s resignation from NRP, the party on March 4 elected a new president, Alexander Ngulube, who said Chakuamba was no longer a member of NRP.
