Despite the resurgence of Covid-19 cases in the country, the ruling Malawi Congress Party says it will go ahead with its planned rally in Lilongwe tomorrow.

In an interview yesterday, the party’s campaign director Moses Kunkuyu said they will follow Covid-19 preventive measures.

Kunkuyu: Covid-19 protocols will be observed

He said: “Going by what the preventive measures stipulate, we are good to go.

“However, we are following the updates so that if there will be any changes, we will also adjust to suit the new guidelines.”

Kunkuyu said the rally is a party function to give its leadership and members at the grassroots a platform to discuss party matters.

In a separate interview, Minister of Health Khumbize Chiponda, who is also co-chairperson of the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19, said there are no restrictions on public gatherings.

“We are guided by a team which does assessments and it is meeting tomorrow [today] to assess the situation on the ground and guide us then we will call for a meeting next week,” she said.

Chiponda said Malawi is still at level one and after assessing new cases and admissions, the team will determine if we have come to level two to make a decision.

However, social media posts have condemned the idea of holding political rallies at a time when Covid-19 cases have started rising in the country.

Chiponda announced yesterday that the country has recorded three Omicron cases, all in Lilongwe and are in isolation.
