Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in partnership with METI University has launched a skills development programme targeting over 5000 youths in the country.

The 10-day programme will equip youth with skills in screen printing, graphic designing, video production and cellphone repair.

Mkaka: The programme is complementing efforts towards creation of 1 million jobs

Speaking on Monday during the launch of the initiative at Blantyre Teachers Training College, MCP secretary general Eisenhower Mkaka who is also Minister of Natural Resources asked youths to take advantage of the programme to uplift their lives.

“We have started with 20 youths as a pilot phase and we will roll out the project across the country to where we will reach about 5000 youths in the next two years.

“The youth economic empowerment programme is complementing the government’s efforts in the creation of 1 million jobs,” he said.

Mkaka further asked officials managing the programme to target youths from disadvantaged families without looking at their political affiliation, region, and tribe.

“Our aim is to empower the youth economically in line with the government vision of creating jobs and worth,” he said.

On his part, METI University vice-chancellor Alex Kantiti said the university is ready to take the programme across the country.

He said: “We have enough experts who will be conducting the training in all regions of the country.”

One of the enrolled students Peter Nkhoma expressed gratitude saying the training will help the youth become economically independent.
