Malawi Congress Party (MCP) councillors have won the mayoral positions in the capital city, Mzuzu City and Kasungu Municipality while the ruling Democratic Progressive Party has won it in the old capital, Zomba.

Former Lilongwe City deputy mayor Juliana Kaduya, who is councillor of Chilinde 1, is the new mayor of Lilongwe with fellow MCP councillor Richard Banda of Kaliyeka Ward as deputy mayor.

Previously, Kaduya went into office as deputy mayor on a DPP ticket, but later dumped the party for MCP. Coincidentally, the former mayor Desmond Bikoko was voted into office on an MCP ticket, but quit the party and joined DPP.

In Kasungu, MCP’s Socrates Jere and Jenala Nyirenda were elected mayor and deputy mayor respectively. In Zomba, DPP reigned supreme as its two councillors—Benson Bula and Antony Gonani—were elected mayor and deputy mayor respectively.

In Mzuzu City, the mayorship has gone to UTM’s Kondwani Brian Nyasulu with MCP’s Gift Desire as his deputy
