mcp_primariesMalawi Congress Party (MCP) youth on New Year’s Day cheered about 200 patients at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Lilongwe where they also donated assorted items.

The items, including soap, sugar and drinks, were valued at over K500 000 (about $1 250).

MCP director of youth and Lilongwe Central Member of Parliament Lobin Lowe said youths in the party raised funds to buy the gifts.

“A lot of people are celebrating at this time while others are in hospital. The youth in MCP under the leadership of the Reverend Lazarus Chakwera are emulating what the country’s first president Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda used to do. We have youths of different calibre in MCP who want to make a positive difference in society and not partake in violence,” he said.

Lowe said the youth also organised a football match with fellow youths at Area 24 Township in the city, saying the game was part of the bonanza to entertain young people in the new year which will see the country going to polls in May to elect the president, MPs and councillors.

“We have also had dances and given our prizes to winners in different categories to mark the launch of these activities. This event is significant because 2014 is a year of elections. Youth are sending a message that they have a critical role to play in politics based on lessons from Kamuzu Banda,” said Lowe.

A guardian in KCH children’s ward, Eda Kachali, said many patients in the ward lacked basic necessities such as sugar and described the support from MCP youth as timely.
